Detstvo deťom
Amalka – early care in the home environment of Roma excluded families

Main aim and activites:

Generational poverty has a negative impact on children‘s development. If a child does not have the necessary support for the first three years of life, it is difficult to correct those negative impacts later in life.

The project‘s goal was to continue working with families from marginalised Roma communities to increase their parental competence, working with adolescents and working with children from birth in their home environment.

Another goal was to develop the organisation as an early intervention support centre. Childhood for Children continued to prepare children for school, educated girls on responsible attitudes towards sexuality and parenthood in a girls‘ club, organised activities of a Montessori club for children aged 1-4 years and a mothers‘ club with children aged 0-3 years. Women from the community were involved in the activities as mentors. The project prepared and updated methodological materials for parents. 180 people, including 111 children and parents from marginalised Roma communities, were actively involved in the project activities. The project contributed to increasing the parenting competencies of young parents from marginalised Roma communities and the professional competencies of mentors and workers from marginalised Roma communities. Working with young and future parents improves their parenting competencies and, consequently, more effectively upbringing children.

Detstvo deťom
Parental Center – Early intervention support center

Main aim and activites:

The early days and years of life are crucial for a child’s development, especially for children brought up in poverty and social exclusion. The aim of the project was therefore to introduce meaningful and effective methods and services at the local level that would contribute to tackling adversity, particularly in the area of early childhood care. As part of the project, the community centre, Domček, became a hub for early intervention support. Activities at the centre focused on early care: direct work with children from birth and their mothers at the centre, counselling and educational activities for mothers before childbirth, with newborns, infants, toddlers and preschool children.

The Detstvo deťom also works with children and mothers in their home environment with the help of 3 mothers from the community who have been trained as mentors for early childhood interventions. Another activity is accompanying underage and adolescent first-time mothers to hospitals and other places with the help of experienced mothers from the community through volunteer work. Parents were provided with early childhood care and developed methodological materials: Early Care I – A guide for early care mentors in families and mothers of children under 1 year. The project implementers established cooperation with representatives of organizations working in Roma communities in 3 localities: Snina, Pila and continued cooperation with the town of Moldava nad Bodvou, where they organized an information and working meeting associated with a lecture and practical demonstrations of activities. The interest in the activities is high, mothers involved in the project activities approach childcare responsibly, regularly participate in the activities and are actively interested in related topics. A total of 262 people have been involved in the project.

Way to Life

Main aim and activities:

Young adults from centers for children and families are a demonstrably vulnerable group who, compared to the population of children growing up in families, get into problems and difficult situations at a significantly higher rate after separation.

The project created an opportunity for young adults to expand the knowledge and skills necessary for successful independence. By involving experts and volunteer guides, a support network has been created to help prevent and solve problems they may find themselves in.

The organization held three weekend stays, one conference, three legal minimum workshops, and 34 online educational and development activities for young adults.

Also, for further education and awareness, the www.usmev.sk/do-zivota sub-site with audiovisual content is publicly available, which contains 31 (instead of the planned 15) compilations of statements of inmates from centers for children and families, 5 graphic instructional videos and 4 medallions of homes on half way. This website is a living library of experiences and the most common problems that foster children struggle with. The project implementers created a system and manual for recruiting, training, caring for volunteers, guides and connecting them with young adults, which was also made available outside our organization to other helping organizations. During the project, this program recruited and retained 18 volunteers.

Hand in hand, step by step

Main aim and activites:

Volunteer programs have been developed to address the emerging needs of children. In the case of tutoring programs, it is mainly an opportunity to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty, to gain positive role models and a vision for life, to gain respectful relationships, routines, and attention from another person.

The objective of the project “Hand in hand, step by step” was to empower vulnerable groups of Roma and non-Roma children and youth, children with disabilities, or those who are not able to integrate into the community after traumatic experiences and need external help through mentoring sessions. Senior volunteers were also actively involved in the activities of the project. A major challenge of the project was to share the know-how from several years of the implementation of long-term volunteer programmes in the Volunteer Centre to other organisations or institutions. This meant finding organisations that are enthusiastic about the idea of volunteering and have experience in working with children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds, disabled children, or seniors.

During the course of the project, 4 volunteering programmes were conducted in Banská Bystrica and two of those were extended to other towns or villages. During the course of the project, the coordinators developed the so-called Minimum Standards of Work in a Volunteer Program, and based on these, a Manual for volunteers new to the programs was developed. The manuals are a part of the training of new volunteers and contain all important information and contact details.  A total of 161 people were involved in the project activities.

Project Omama – early care for children from excluded Roma communities

Main aim and activites:

Research shows that the first 1000 days from conception are crucial for brain development. However, children from the poorest communities have few opportunities to train for example motor activity, few have educational toys or books at home, parents do not have the necessary skills. All this brings omama to families. During the implementation period, six 3-4 day trainings were carried out, focusing on early stimulation and the Play wisely method, topics from the field of psychology (emotional attachment, parental skills), pedagogy (development of executive functions), etc.

During the coronavirus pandemic, 10 webinars were organized via ZOOM. The trainings were regularly attended by 16 omamas, 9 mentors and 8 representatives of civic associations.

The project offers a systemic solution of early education for children from MRC, necessary for their successful start at school and in life. It was mentioned in the material Modern and Successful Slovakia as an example of good practice.
